Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July! Each year, I look forward to celebrating our nation’s independence with my fellow Delawareans, especially at the Fourth of July Parade! Today’s holiday is not only a day to spend time with family and friends, but also an opportunity to recognize our history.

During this time of year, I often think of Delaware’s critical role in the founding of our nation. On July 1, 1776, Delaware’s president, Caesar Rodney, made an overnight trip on horseback from Dover, Delaware to Philadelphia to deliver the state’s vote in favor of the Declaration of Independence. Years later, Delaware led the colonies in the ratification of our Constitution and earned its title as the First State.

This day also reminds me of the work remaining to make our nation a more perfect union. In Washington, I have been working on legislation that continues the First State’s leadership and advances the democracy we first fought for so many years ago. We can, and always should, strive to do better. I remain optimistic about the state of our union and committed to working with Democrats and Republicans on making it more perfect.

As we celebrate our independence and reflect on our state and country’s history, let us strive for a better future together. I am honored to serve the great state of Delaware and continue our commitment to democracy today, and every day.

I wish you and all of your families a happy and safe Fourth of July.

Tom Carper
