Happy Fourth of July!

Today marks the 240th birthday of the world’s oldest, greatest experiment in democracy, the United States of America! When our Founding Fathers signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4th, 1776, they set forth for us a vision of democracy that would afford all Americans the opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. On this special day, I want to wish you and your family a very happy Independence Day.

The Fourth of July is one of my favorite days of the year because it gives us all a chance to come together, celebrate as one community, and give thanks for the freedoms we all share. As we celebrate, it’s important to take a moment and recognize the brave men and women of our armed forces who have fought for the freedoms we enjoy today.

This day also reminds me of the work remaining to make our nation a more perfect union. In everything we do in Congress, we should strive for a more perfect union. I look forward to working with my colleagues in Congress — with Democrats, Republicans and independents alike — in the weeks and months to come to work towards building a more perfect United States of America.

Please share with me how you are celebrating the Fourth of July and what this holiday means to you through email or on Twitter @SenatorCarper or Facebook at facebook.com/tomcarper.
