American Red Cross Delmarva Region Honors Sen. Carper as Community Resilience Champion

WILMINGTON, Del. – Today, the American Red Cross Delmarva Region announced U.S. Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.) has been named its Community Resilience Champion. This award recognizes an individual or organization that exhibits leadership in mobilizing the community to take the necessary steps to prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies. 

“I am honored the American Red Cross has chosen me for this award,” said Sen. Carper. “In the last several years, powerful storms have hit Delaware and the East Coast, reminding us that it’s never too early to prepare our homes, businesses and communities for these terrible events.  I will continue my efforts to help spread the word and educate citizens to become better prepared for emergencies and life-threatening situations, and to encourage the folks who can, to volunteer.”

Sen. Carper has long supported the good work the American Red Cross does in the community, not only in the Delmarva region, but nationwide. Long before becoming Chairman of the Senate Committee on Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs in 2013, he worked fervently with the American Red Cross to help communities in Delaware prepare for and recover from emergencies, most recently Superstorm Sandy. Last year on the anniversary of Superstorm Sandy, he spoke on the Senate Floor to recognize the American Red Cross volunteers and the sacrifices they and their families make to help others.
