Carper to Read to Sussex 2nd Graders to Kick Off Senate Recess,

LEWES, DE – Jill Sillicato’s second-grade class will get a special “Guest Reader” this Friday. During the first day of the Senate’s spring recess, Senator Tom Carper will read to the class of seven-and-eight-years-olds at Shields Elementary School in Lewes this Friday. He will then take a tour of the school. “After weeks of debate on campaign finance reform, national energy policy and the budget, the Senate stands in recess. But even during recess, we need to keep reading,” Carper said. “Reading is the key to understanding and the foundation for success in school. My hope is that children will learn that reading can be more than a homework assignment. Reading is the doorway to a world of unlimited possibilities.” WHO: Lewes Second-Graders, Senator Tom Carper WHAT: Kick off Senate Recess WHERE: Shields Elementary School, Savannah Road, Lewes, DE WHEN: 2:00 to 2:30 pm, Friday, March 22, 2002
