Georgetown, DE – Senator Tom Carper will spend Monday, November 3, 2003, in Sussex County visiting several local schools. The Senator’s first stop will be at Woodbridge High School in Bridgeville, where he will congratulate Rita Hovermale, Delaware’s Teacher of the Year for 2003-2004. Hovermale is the first Woodbridge School District teacher to be chosen for this prestigious honor. She is the 40th Teacher of the Year since Delaware’s recognition program began in 1965. Senator Carper will then put on his gym clothes and exercise with students at Mariner Middle School, formerly Milton Middle School. The school was recently named as a state champion school by the President’s Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The President’s Challenge Physical Activity and Fitness Awards Program, available to the nation’s schools since 1958, offers presidential recognition and awards for fitness to all participating young people. Schools designated as a State Champion receive a distinctive award certificate as well as statewide and national recognition for their fitness achievement. Finally, Senator Carper will be visiting Philip C. Showell Elementary School. Phillip C. Showell Elementary School was recently selected to receive the “No Child Left Behind – Blue Ribbon Schools Award” from the U.S. Department of Education.
