Sen. Carper Supports New White House Renewable Fuels Standard

WASHINGTON – Sen. Tom Carper (D-Del.), chairman of the Senate Clean Air and Nuclear Safety subcommittee applauded the announcement by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that today it is finalizing the revisions to the Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS).

“I believe biofuels done right, is a good thing. Biofuels can give us an environmentally friendly option to move away from foreign fossil fuels.

“With the new RFS, I believe the EPA has struck the right balance between lowering our dependency on foreign oil, while not adversely impacting the environment or our economy.

“The EPA is sending a clear signal to industry and the market that we need to invest now in the next generation of renewable fuels, and continue to invest in clean, affordable, domestic sources of energy.”

Under the Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, Congress greatly expanded the Renewable Fuel Standards (RFS) within the Clean Air Act from 13 billion gallons in 2010 to 36 billion gallons by 2022. Of the 36 billion gallons of biofuels, 21 billion gallons must be biodiesel, cellulosic and other advanced fuels. Congress also explicitly required the EPA to account for direct and indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from the production and use of renewable fuels and biofuels, verses the use of gasoline and diesel.
