Carper Kicks Off Nationwide Salute to Charter Schools ar Kuumba Academy Monday

WILMINGTON, DE – Senator Tom Carper will kick off a nationwide salute to charter schools Monday afternoon with students and parents at Wilmington’s Kuumba Academy Charter School. Carper is a co-chair of the Congressional Salute to Charter Schools Week and has cosponsored a Senate resolution supporting National Charter Schools Week. This nationwide celebration will be observed April 29th-May 3rd. “We need to ensure that parents with children trapped in failing schools are offered what they want for their children. If their children are not getting what they want and need, they have the choice and the ability to go somewhere else,” said Carper. “More than a half million students attend charter schools in our country. This week we celebrate the communities that support them.” Carper has been a strong advocate for charter schools. The first piece of legislation he sponsored as a Senator was the “Empowering Parents Act”, a measure encouraging choice for students trapped in failing schools. It passed the Senate with broad bipartisan support and was included in the landmark education legislation signed by President Bush. Bush has endorsed National Charter Schools Week 2002 as well.
