Carper Statement on New Pictures Shown to Senators Today Depicting Prisoner Abuse In Iraq

WASHINGTON, D.C. (May 12, 2004) – Sen. Tom Carper, D-Del., released the following statement after viewing more pictures and videotape of prisoner abuse in Iraq made available to senators Wednesday afternoon: “The images I saw today were gruesome, and similar to what has already been made public. The behavior exhibited by some of our military servicemen and women in Iraq is something we all deplore. Looking at the photos and video today reinforced my strong conviction that we hold not only the perpetrators accountable, but also anyone else– all the way up the military line of command — involved in the abuse of Iraqi prisoners. In addition, we need to be assured by military commanders that the abuse we’ve seen is not systematic and that measures are being taken to ensure the proper treatment of all prisoners.”
